Hello and welcome to my web site. My name is JEFF TURNER, I am an artist and my work consists mostly of welded steel, stainless steel and cor-ten (weathering steel) SCULPTURE. Although I am classically trained I feel that I am better able to express myself by working in an abstract or non-objective manner that is also more in keeping with the times in which we live.
My SCULPTURE runs the gamut from TABLE TOP to MONUMENTAL in SIZE with a lot of the work quite suitable for gardens, yards, as patio pieces or to install in front of and to beautify and call attention to small businesses such as real estate, insurance, doctors offices or manufacturing facilities. I also create ONE OF A KIND functional and very UNIQUE TABLES and CHAIRS. I am more than happy to give a FREE CONSULTATION and will also DELIVER and INSTALL the work for a reasonable fee.
I was born and raised in the Brooklyn and Queens boroughs of N.Y.C. and lived in that area for the better part of my life. As a child I was always interested in art but was sidetracked by other endeavors and didn't start to pursue an art career until I was in my early 20's. I studied mostly in private art schools and I am forever indebted to Jean and Joe Mack of Huntington, N.Y. for their seriousness of purpose, their level of teaching and their generosity towards me and the other students. I studied there for about 4 years, taking life drawing, painting and sculpture classes. I also was a p/t apprentice to Joe Mack, helping him work on welded steel sculptures. That was my introduction to welded steel sculpture and I've pursued that as my primary vein of creativity ever since. Growing up in N.Y.C. had the other advantage of being the cultural capital of the world so I made it a point to become exposed to all the great art being shown there. That education has proven to be invaluable.
I have worked other jobs but since the early 80s, creating art has been my full time occupation. I eat, breathe and sleep art and couldn't imagine my life without it. I currently reside in Silver City, New Mexico.
My work is now in SEEDBOAT GALLERY and ARTWORKS GALLERY (my home gallery) both of which are in Silver City, NM.
In the spring of 2008, I am looking forward to showing in LUMINA GALLERY and their wonderful sculpture garden (www.luminagallery.com) located just north of Taos, NM.

My work is about feeling, expressed through non-objective form.
If a piece starts to look decorative, I change it.
I am interested in the play of light and shadow and how straight geometric forms counterbalanced by curved shapes impart drama and help guide the viewers eye around the work.
Self expression is primary and beauty takes care of itself
